KZ Mauthausen

Entry to the former concentration camp
Entry to the former concentration camp

It was the only camp in the Third Reich classified as category 3, which stood for extermination through work. The prisoners were forced to work e.g. in the quarries of Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH, established after the annexation of Austria into Germany. The plant belonged to the SS and was involved in the extraction of building materials. Other companies such as Bayer, Messerschmitt and Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG also took advantage of the forced labour. Work lasted from nine to eleven hours a day except for Sundays. The food was insufficient and the penalties for the most minor offenses were exceptionally brutal. One of the most cruel was the work in the penal unit, where they had to carry stones weighing up to 50 kilograms on their backs from the quarry to the camp. The prisoners were also murdered by being pushed down from a height of 50 meters. This is how Dutch Jews, in particular, died. From March 1942, about 35,000 people were also murdered with gas. In February 1945, 500 inmates managed to escape, but were quickly caught, which was also helped by the local residents. Probably 11 fugitives, who were lucky enough to come across benevolent local inhabitants, managed to survive.

The Americans liberated the camp on the 5th of May 1945 with the help of a Red Cross delegate Louis Häfliger. About 40,000 to 50,000 prisoners were saved. The victims of KZ Mauthausen and its sub-camps included many participants of the Warsaw Uprising:
