Mielżyński, Maciej Ignacy Przecław hrabia (Mathias von Brudzewo-Mielzynski, Mathias Graf von Brudzewo Mielzynski, Mathias Graf-Comte Mielzynski-Brudzewo), 1903-14 member of the Reichstag of the German Empire. *13.10.1869 Köbnitz/Chobienice near Bomst/Babimost, †9.1.1944 Vienna, lord of the manor, painter, officer, publicist. After attending grammar schools in Berlin, Schneidemühl/Piła and Lissa/Leszno he studied law (and painting) for two years at the University in Munich, following which he worked as a painter in Munich. He subsequently served as a guard officer in the Leib-Kürassier-Regiment “Großer Kurfürst” (Schlesisches) Nr. 1 in Breslau. In 1896 he worked in an unofficial capacity in the entourage of the Regiment (“à la suite”), which he left in 1897. From 1896 onwards he ran the farming activities on his estate at Köbnitz. He worked for the political and literary sections of Polish newspapers. In June 1903 he was elected as a member of the Polish parliamentary group in the German Reichstag for the constituency of Samter-Birnbaum-Obornik/Szamotuły-Międzychód-Oborniki with a majority of 53.78%; in January 1907 with a majority of 52.28%; and in January 1912 with a majority of 52.66%. Amongst the select committees on which he served were those for measurement units, motor vehicles, marine administration, household regulations, finance systems, the Reich budget, growth tax law, Alsace-Lorraine, accident insurance and spirits quotas. On the 6th January he resigned his seat after being accused of murder for shooting his wife, Felicja Potocka and her nephew and lover Alfred Miączyński on 21st December 1913 because of their adulterous relationship. He was declared innocent on the grounds that he was defending his honour. During the First World War he served in the army of the German Empire. In 1920 he was made a Major in the Polish army. Under the code name “Nowina Doliwa” he played a leading role in the 3rd Polish Uprising in Upper Silesia in 1921. In 1939/40 he lived in Warsaw; from 1940 in Vienna under the surveillance of the Gestapo. picture: 1912.
